Career Spotlight: Audio Visual Technicians

You’ve probably heard of careers such as Graphic Designers and Videographers but one of the lesser-known careers in the media field is an Audio/Visual Technician or an AV Tech. 

The Set up

AV tech’s set up, maintain and dismantle audio and video equipment such as microphones and sound speakers. They connect and disconnect wires, cables, sound and mixing boards, video cameras, video monitors, servers and related electronic equipment for live and recorded events such as concerts, meetings, conventions, presentations, podcasts, news conferences and sporting events. 

A Foot in the Door

AV Techs may also be involved in recording and editing audio and video content, managing multimedia libraries, and assisting in post-production tasks. They possess extensive knowledge of audio and video signal flow, connectivity options and troubleshooting techniques. For this reason, AV techs are seen as great entry-level occupations into the media field. Many people start here and work their way up to videographers or video editors. 

Salary/Requirements

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment projections for AV Techs show faster than average growth over the next ten years, meaning these jobs will be in high demand. Currently the average salary for an AV Tech is around $55,000 per year and the top tasks include: diagnosing and resolving media systems problems, compress, digitize and duplicate and store audio and video data and install, adjust, and operate electronic equipment to record, edit and transit various audio and video files. 

A GED or higher is usually required for this occupation along with 1-2 years of training. Keep in mind that this occupation requires the monitoring of dials, gauges and other indicators to make sure all equipment is working properly. You will need to have good attention to detail and be able to move, assemble and fix equipment. 

So, if you have a basic understanding of gadgets, tools and a variety of technical equipment, this growing occupation may be right for you.
